Planning a Party

Planning a party can be a huge undertaking, especially if you want to make sure your bar is stocked with everything you will need to suit most drink requests. Beer and wine still rank as among the most popular beverages for parties; however, you will also want to make sure you are prepared for the most requested mixed drinks as well.

Drinks tend to move in cycles when it comes to popularity, especially mixed drinks. Some of the current most popular drinks include the Dirty Martini, Cosmopolitan, Chocolate Martini and Apple Martini.

For these fun and popular drinks you will need: vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, orange peel, gin, vermouth, olive brine, olives, gin, green-apple Schnapps, white crème de cacao, Hershey Kisses and powdered cocoa.

In addition to stocking up on all of the ingredients you’ll need for those drinks, there are also a few other tips you should follow in order to plan a successful party.

Always make sure you have plenty of ice. If you have an ice maker in your fridge, be aware that even that won’t usually be enough, so buy extra. You will need plenty of ice for chilling bottles of champagne as well as wine along with ice for serving drinks on the rocks. Ideally, it is best to plan on having 1 pound of ice for each guest you invite.

You should also make sure you have enough assorted glass styles to not only cover the number of guests you intend to invite to your party but also the types of drinks you plan to serve or have available. Examples of glasses you will need include wine glasses (used for juice, water and of course, wine) tumblers (juices and spirits), highball glasses for tall drinks, and martini glasses.

Generally, you should plan to have twice as many glasses as number of guests you will invite. It’s also a good idea to stock up on some glass charms to help guests keep up with their glasses.

When it comes to stocking wine and champagne, if those are the only drinks you will be serving, plan to have one bottle per two guests. Always make sure you have both red and white wine on hand. This will get you through a two hour party. For longer parties, stock up on additional bottles.

For serving a variety of mixed drinks you will also need beer, wine, whiskey and vodka. You may also wish to add bourbon, rum, tequila, gin, sherry, vermouth and brandy.
For mixed drinks you will also need juices such as orange and tomato along with soda, ginger ale, tonic, cola and some garnishes such as lemons, limes, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and horseradish. Don’t forget olives and onions.

When planning the menu for your party, don’t forget to include plenty of non-alcoholic choices as well. This is nice to offer those wonderful designated drivers who keep the roads safe for everyone. This is also a good idea for those party goers who like to moderate their drinking by slipping in a glass of water, juice or cola in between alcoholic selections. Of course, you should also plan on having a few munchies for everyone, as well.

While there are numerous handy bartending guides on the market, if you feel uncomfortable mixing a variety of mixed drinks you may wish to hire a professional bartender. This not only ensures your guests have a good time but gives you more time to spend with them as well.

It’s also usually a good idea to keep the coffee pot going just in case anyone feels they need it as well as have the number of a reliable cab company handy. After all, you don’t want your fun party to turn into a tragic event.
